New 42m long LPG tanks installed at Gasco
29th July 2011
In 2006 MMP were appointed to design and supervise the construction of a new state-of-the-art LPG Filling Facility for Gasco Energy Limited.
Works on site started in August 2010 and are proceeding apace with the Civil Works scheduled for completion by the end of this year. On Friday the 29 July the first of six 42m long storage tanks were transported to the Gasco Energy Limited site. The tanks were delivered, three at a time, to the Malta Freeport by specialized heavy lift ship. Mammoet, the internationally renowned heavy lift specialists, were responsible for transporting the tanks from the Malta Freeport to the site. They did this using their patented transportation dollies which allowed for movement in three dimensions. The dollies were set up with a total of forty eight individually controlled, electrically powered, wheels. Forty eight wheels were required in order to transfer the three hundred tonne weight of the tanks to the temporary road surface. MMP was responsible for providing the correct gradients and cross falls along the route and also for ensuring that the temporary road surface formed using Type1 material was adequate to support the load imposed by the dolly. MMP were also responsible for the 7 metre span bridge along part of the route over which the tanks had to pass. The operation for loading, transporting and unloading each tank took roughly one day and all six tanks were positioned on site within one week. The whole operation was completed without a hitch thanks to the long hours spent planning each phase of the job.

Making our Towns More Sustainable

Perit Vincent Magri identifies people‘s attitudes as one of the main reasons why sustainable initiatives take so long to be undertaken. In an article published by The Sunday Times of Malta newspaper, he argues that whatever one’s background and field of operation, actions can always be sustainable. Local Councils, being the administrative units close to the individual person, are in a unique position to promote a bottom-up approach. Image by Clemson University.
